Say Something! Exercise

Make a Statement:

Identify an issue or problem with your location.

Is the location misunderstood? Not visible? Underused? Closed?

Perhaps the problem is with how people use the space?

Could you voice the issue? Who's voice is it? The buildings? The public? Yours?

It could be a big problem like underfunding or risk of closure or it could be a smaller issue like nowhere for residents to play ball games or to sit and enjoy the surroundings.

To Do:

Write a sentence that describes an issue of problem with your location.
Get out your editing scissors and reduce the sentence to the essence of the issue.

Idea: You could rephrase it as a question, draw attention to the problem, or even provide a solution!

The end result should ideally be 4 words or less.

Idea: Use strong, clear language that communicates the issue effectively. Choose words that use your favourite letters.

Make a quick sketch on paper of your statement for a portrait poster.
Make a quick sketch on paper of your statement for a landscape billboard.
Now use your typeface to make an A4 mock-up of your type in action for the portrait poster and landscape billboard.

Idea: Do the letters and words you have chosen work together? Work on the space and kerning between the words and letters.

Save the page as a PDF to view your statement. If you have access to a printer print it out.
Add some colour. What colours can you imagine the statement in to make it stand out and be noticed?

This afternoon you are going to materialise your statements. Do you have any material, scissors, paper, card, glue, pens or paint? Do you have access to a printer? If yes gather some things together over lunch.
